photographer

This is a photo that Lane took of his baby sister. He took quite a few that I like. The week could feature pictures by Lane.

reflection

Back in NYC with sweet memories of the weekend. Four of the five made it into this shot - the fifth is actually stage left tending a fire. They sure love that trampoline.

payaso

Yesterday we celebrated Mike's 4 - 0, even though the actual day isn't until Wednesday. Since he is still in his frivolent 30s he decided to let his hair down. A good time was had by all.

ghost

First day with the neices and nephews in Gig Harbor. Whittie picked out this picture to upload. Her sister Natalie is playing with baby Julia, who is almost to big to be a baby anymore, but she is still the youngest. Lane has requested that I write his name, so here it is, he even wrote it out for me. And he also wants me to write 'whiskers.'

bar

Lovely weather today in New York. Last night Basil stopped by the Center with his good friend from college and partner. We hit the 'bar' on Greenwich he had always wanted to check out, the one with a window looking out on the street across from Equinox. Then we had great Italian at I Sodi on Christopher. Tasty food and they were very attentive. A lovely evening.

smart

Here is the reason why this car really is smart in New York City.

dahlia

As I was walking by the community gardens on 104th Street in my neighborhood I saw these huge dahlias and stopped to take a picture through the fence. A woman walking by said, Those are my dahlias, come inside, comes inside. She went in and proceeded to prune them. She was very proud of them and quite happy I took the picture.

high alert

The United Nations General Assembly is in session, meaning motorcades and blocked zones. Since the U.N. is on the east side it's mostly far removed from my daily movements. But last night as I biked up the west side I noticed that 34th Street was completely closed down.

fall

Today is the autumnal equinox and it certainly feels like it in New York when the high today will only reach 61 F. So yesterday was the last glorious day of summer and nature delivered a beautiful sunny Sunday. I made it to the park for about an hour before I had to work.

portal

The entrance to the Department of Sanitation pier at the end of the Riverside Park bike path is particularly dangerous for bikers as large trucks swing in and out of it across the path. It's oddly neoclassical too.

sunset

Well, I never made a rule that it had to be just one post a day - so here's your two on one. I posted late in the day anyway, as it was again an early weekend - starting downtown with a taping, finishing the online version of the show and another camera training class. On the way back uptown I stopped along the river to take this picture of the sun setting over the Hudson.

TGIF

Last night, Friday, as I was biking through midtown to go to a concert I ran across the following film shoot in front of the James Farley Post Office (and future Moynihan Station). I have no idea what they were shooting, but they had placed neon questions on the steps of the post office: 'Is the Doughnut doomed?' 'Which religion will win?' 'Should women settle?' 'Is Google making us stupid' Are these questions rhetorical? In any case, the google in question is the principle vehicle for the enlightening links I include in these posts. You don't expect me to remember the name of our main post office do you?

lights, camera, action

Just south of the flower garden featured in an earlier post a film crew had set up to do some kind of shooting. Always an annoying thing in NYC, especially downtown where entire streets are blocked off, but Riverside Park is big enough to accommodate everyone and people stopped to watch the action.

red-tail

Biking down to work yesterday I spotted a red-tailed hawk in the children's playground at the boat basin. It gave me a chance to try out the 15X digital zoom on the new powershot. It also reminded me I am missing the fall migration and have to get to the park again.

room with a view

When I started at the Center the media work was in a shared space and it was very cramped. As we grew they figured out a place to put us - renovating a storage space where the sound equipment for the dances used to be stored. The Center is always a work in progress - right now they are fixing the roof - much needed as it leaks. The most exciting plan is the capital campaign in which they will put a new building in the garden.

full moon

Was working last night when a friend texted me to ask if I had seen and taken a picture of the full moon. On the way home I did. It was windy and brisk on the river. Fall is a coming.

all aboard

What a great day yesterday and it didn't rain! Thanks to Rick and David for covering the Wedding March, to Chris and Larry who covered Men Having Babies and the gang who completed their second day of camera training. More progress on CCNet and a lovely nightcap at the Eagle - who could ask for anything more?

kayaks

Another muggy day in NYC. At least the threat of rain seems to have diminished - I'm sure the wedding marchers are happy about that. I'll be working instead of marching, but I can always catch the video later thanks to Rick and David.

better late than never

Posting a little late in the day because I overslept this morning. Biked it down to the Center where Mari had already started the first camera training in the new cycle. For most of the day I started working on the CCNet project. I captured two tapes and started logging another - there are seven total. It feels good to get a project out of the way that has hung over my head since last year. I also realized how much I liked the people I met in Sao Paulo last October, which is a good thing since I have to live with their voices and images for a while longer.

intrepid

Yesterday I was biking by the site of the Intrepid in midtown when I noticed they were towing the dredging crane back out into the river. The aircraft carrier has been away for repairs, when they attempted to ship it out, they noticed it was quite stuck in river sediment. They have been digging out the dock ever since. There is a sign on the dock indicating how many days till it returns. Today it will be 19.

what's it all about

Alfie biked in from New Jersey yesterday morning to go down the river with me. He is on the east coast visiting his mom. The last time I saw him was in Oakland I don't know how many years ago. It was nice to catch up. Unfortunately the expresso bar on the river doesn't have breakfast sandwiches, but he was a good sport about it. Afterwards he biked out to Sunnyside to see a friend and then back to New Jersey.

magical fruit

Yesterday Chris, Ben and I had our planning session for the new forty-something group. Then we went to Benny's. I had too many beans in one day, ugh.

vote

Sunday night was the first evening that I noticed the Tribute in Light at the site of the World Trade Center from the East Village. Last night I got a picture of it from the West Side Highway and Hudson River path before biking back uptown. Today is the New York State primary - be sure you vote. Since I'm still registered Green looks like I'm left out.

howl

For being under the weather on Saturday I came back with a vengeance yesterday. Biked downtown to do some work and then hit the Howl Festival for the Low City show. This photo was taken from my camera phone after it was over. I had used up the 2 GB memory card on my camera. After that a quick beer with Basil & crew, then a beer and some herring with the German gang, and then a last glass of wine with Jorge and friends - it was his birthday yesterday. I walked him to the train and we talked and he showed me some pictures he took in Morocco. It was sweet to have a moment with him as he is leaving soon. I turned around and noticed the Monument in Lights is already on as two blue columns shot into the night. And then he left.

flowers

Biking downtown to work from my apartment I enter Riverside Park just below 96th Street. A few blocks later there are some beautiful lush flower gardens that are maintained by people in the neighborhood. Earlier in the summer there were huge flowers - irises and roses - now things have calmed down a bit, but there are still quite a few. In May this is where I took a few close ups of flowers and e-mailed them to Mom for Mother's Day. In the background top and center you can make out the rear side of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument.

iac

Biking home last night I go back up the Hudson bike path. Across from the Chelsea piers is the IAC a newish building designed by Frank Gehry. The screens on the first floor change constantly, but you notice it more at night.

la rentree

Yesterday was my birthday and my friend Basil treated me to a new shirt and a cocktail before we went gallery hopping in West Chelsea. The crowds were out in force for the start of the season. Later on it was dinner with the gang in the garden of Gascogne.

hudson

Today is my birthday and I have decided to start a year of daily picture posting. The weather has been wonderful these last weeks and most days I bike down to work at the Center along the Hudson River bike path. This photo is when I hit the boat basin at about 80th Street.
